Student Life

The newly developed Buddy Program is a way of integrating and supporting international students right from the beginning of their exchange. Each student is given a ‘buddy’ upon arrival to help integrate with the University’s community and develop a support network. Through this program, the international student will learn about Uruguayan culture and have their 'buddy' as a useful resource to navigate life in Montevideo.

The University offers a variety of sports such as basketball, football, handball and hockey. Internal and inter-university tournaments are organized and participation in these teams is warmly welcomed and is a great way to discover other parts of Uruguay and integrate into the wider university life. The ‘Adventurer’s Club’ organizes outdoor activities around the country such as hiking and canoeing and an opportunity exists to do a trip to hike up Machu Pichu.

For more information please visit UM’s sport website in Spanish: https://www.um.edu.uy/deporteshttps://www.um.edu.uy/deportes

The UM encourages volunteering activities within the local community and has many links with projects around Montevideo. These opportunities are open to international students and are highly recommended to get a better idea of the realities of Uruguay.

The University provides students with a library that offers a wide range of services: librarian help, silent and group study, book borrowing and renewal, e-book borrowing, reference services, international and national database access and ISBN services.

The UM also offers wireless on-campus and access to multiple computer labs throughout the University's many buildings.

The Universidad de Montevideo does not provide on-campus housing. However, the Office of International Affairs sends out a housing list before the beginning of every semester with multiple choices of living situations such as international residences, house stays and independent rooms to rent.

The UM strongly recommends that exchange students arrange permanent housing for their stay. Upon arrival, it is our suggestion to book a hostel for your first weeks and search for appropriate permanent housing in-person.

The University Chaplaincy offers support to all members of the UM community who wish to avail themselves of this service, whatever their beliefs may be. It promotes various activities: spiritual retreats, formative courses, and preparation to receive the sacraments.

There is a chapel in the University's premises to facilitate sacramental practices and prayer. Holy Mass takes place from Mondays through Fridays. The Chaplain is also available to hear confessions. The Chaplain is pleased to attend to any requests for advice and guidance, both in human and in spiritual matters.

Travel information & Visas

International flights arrive directly to Carrasco International Airport located 45 minutes outside the center of the city. The University can hire a reliable taxi service to pick you up at the airport upon request.

Another option is to fly into Buenos Aires and take the boat across the River Plate to Montevideo. Different ferry companies offer a bus-boat service between Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

The University is fifteen minutes away from Tres Cruces Bus Terminal where all long-distance coaches and buses serve many destinations in South America daily.

Before traveling, visit the Oficina Nacional de Migración website to see if you need a visa to enter Uruguay. Contact the Uruguayan Embassy before traveling if your country is not on the list of accepted countries.

Citizens from countries that do not need an entry visa may enter Uruguay on a three-month tourist visa. This type of visa is issued upon arrival at the airport and is renewable for 90 days. You can extend your stay at https://www.gub.uy/tramites/prorroga-permanencia-temporaria.

Study a Degree at the UM

The University of Montevideo is open to all students, foreign and Uruguayan, who have completed their secondary education outside the country and who want to pursue university studies in Uruguay.

University admission is subject to the following requirements, mandated by the Uruguayan Board of Secondary Education:

1. Photocopy of current passport.
2. Diploma certifying completion of secondary studies.
3. Academic transcript listing all secondary courses that the student has passed. This justifies the issuance of their secondary diploma.

Students coming from the Hague Apostille Convention countries may present their diploma and transcript with an apostille issued by their state or country.

Students from all other countries need to legalize their documents at the Uruguayan Consulate in the country where they completed their secondary studies. Upon arrival in Uruguay, they must obtain additional certification at the Division of Consular Affairs of the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Relations (Cuareim 1384, CP 11.100 – Tel. 29021010 ext. 3126).

Revalidation of secondary studies is granted by the Uruguayan Board of Secondary Education – Technical Inspection, Revalidations Section (Juncal 1397 – Montevideo).

Any questions regarding the revalidation process should be directed to the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Relations (Cuareim 1384, CP 11.100 – Tel. 29021010 ext. 3126).

The Graduate Admission process is directed through the Admissions Team at the Faculty/School where you plan to study. This means you should send an email or WhatsApp to your desired School and ask for guidelines to apply to any graduate program.

All full-programs are mostly taught in Spanish, although there are a few seminars and courses taught entirely in English.

International students

The Universidad de Montevideo invites international students from partner universities to study in Uruguay for one semester or a full academic year. Students can enroll in various courses across different faculties, including the School of Business Administration and Economics, the School of Law, the School of Humanities and Education, the School of Engineering, and the School of Communications.

Student Exchange Program

The Student Exchange Program is coordinated between the Universidad de Montevideo and its partner universities from around the world. Students pay their home university tuition while studying abroad at the UM. These exchanges allow students to experience cultural immersion, acquire a foreign language, and develop a deeper appreciation of Uruguayan culture.
