Almost 60 volunteers traveled to Minas from March 28th to March 31st for “Universitarios en Acción”, a social work day organized by the UM´s volunteering organization (VUM). There were not only Uruguayans among the participants but also Exchange students from various countries such as: Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia and United States.
The main task took place in the Verdún School, where the students painted and conditioned several spaces. The volunteers also shared an evening of music with elderlies from a nursing home and games with an INAU home.
Paula Vilaseca the new person in charge of VUM explained that the goal of the volunteering organization is to next to the efforts of the University to help students, “obtain great academic results and become great professionals”, stimulate the effort of students to discover the richness in giving a part of oneself to others and “the encounter with others”. Between sandpapers, brushes and the change of color of the school, she said: “Volunteering is to take part not to talk”.
On Saturday morning the volunteers received the visit of the University rector Juan Manuel Gutiérrez Carrau who portrayed his joy with the hard work and the enthusiastic atmosphere. The activity also included moments for reflection and a visit to the Minas Cathedral, where paintings from Maurillo have been exposed for several years. On the last day, the students climbed the Verdún hill.
