The UM Experience

Why Montevideo?
The smallest Hispanic country in South America, Uruguay is bordered to the north by Brazil, to the west by Argentina, to the south by the Rio Plata, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and has nearly 500 kilometers of wide, sandy beaches.
Located on the Río de la Plata, Montevideo (population 1.5 million) is lively and modern, yet more like a large town than a city. The Old Town, a small peninsula near the city port, offers many examples of the country’s colonial past. Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Punta del Este, a famous coastal resort, are only a short drive or bus ride from the capital.
Whilst you are studying with us you will have the opportunity to visit other countries of the South America such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. Montevideo is in the heart of the Southern Cone of Latin America with most major cities are within a few hours travel time.
Learning at UM
The University of Montevideo offers international students an unparalleled learning experience in Uruguay. Founded in 1986, the University is committed to academic excellence, research, technological innovation and social responsibility. UM graduates are sought after for their quality of education as well as their strong work ethic and dedication to their community.
International students who choose UM can expect engaging classes taught by professors who are distinguished scholars in their fields and professions. The school provides students with a library complete with ample study space, multiple computer labs throughout the Universities’ many buildings, and dedicated, resourceful guidance and support from University faculty and staff.
Activities
The University provides students with extracurricular activities to keep them busy outside of the classroom. Students can get involved with one of the intramural sport teams such as football and field hockey, or volunteer through one of the university-wide volunteer programs. The Office of International Affairs is also available to help students find other activities within Montevideo that meet their individual interests.
Buddy Program
At the beginning of each semester, international students will be matched with a Uruguayan student from UM as part of the university’s Buddy Program. The program aims to integrate international students into the UM community through organized gatherings and trips. The program promotes language practice, a better understanding of the Uruguayan culture and a truly global network of friends.
Volunteering
Volunteering is another important means by which students can integrate into Uruguayan society in a positive and meaningful way while they are in Uruguay. It is also a valuable source of work experience. Uruguay provides many volunteering opportunities that relate directly to students’ own personal interests. Over the years, Universidad de Montevideo has developed working relationships with a number of volunteer organizations.
Uruguay offers different alternatives for volunteers that match the interests of each person. For example, students who would like to contribute to the human, cultural, professional and social development of families on the outskirts of Montevideo can volunteer with CADI, an institution which opens new horizons to people by comprehensive educational programs for women from early childhood to seniors.
